And once you’re connected, it’s equally important to update the operating system and antivirus software on a regular basis.

5 Major steps to help protect your new computer

before you go online.

The following steps will help you set up your new computer with the latest security tools available.

Step 1: Verify the firewall on your computer

If you’re running Windows Vista or Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you should already have Windows Firewall running, and you can proceed to Step 2.

To see what operating system your computer is running, click Start, My Computer, and then click View system information to open the System Properties window. This information is listed on the General tab under System.

Tip: With Windows Vista or Windows XP SP2 installed, you can manage Windows Firewall and other security settings in one place to help protect your computer. If you don’t have SP2 installed or do not wish to install it, see How to Enable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP.

Step 2: Get software updates on your computer

•	Turn on Automatic Updates.
•	Plug in your modem or network cable for Internet access.
•	Click Start and point to Control Panel. Select Network Connections in the Control Panel.
•	Choose Create a new connection to start the Network Connection Wizard.
•	After you’re connected, allow Microsoft Update to install the latest security and software updates.

After all updates are installed and your settings are defined, you’re ready to surf the Internet.

Just remember that it’s important to be diligent with computer security technologies, so run Microsoft Update regularly, check the latest downloads and product updates, keep Automatic Updates turned on, and be aware of the latest security threats.

Step 3: Download antivirus software

Review the inventory or packing list that came with your computer to make sure the hard disk has all the listed software installed and the original installation CDs are there. This bundle typically includes security software from a recognized computer security company.

In most cases, a trial version of this software should have been preinstalled on the computer or included on a disk. If it wasn’t, contact the computer manufacturer for a replacement.

If security software wasn’t included with the original order, you should obtain and install antivirus software before continuing.

Microsoft offers Windows Live OneCare, a comprehensive service that helps protect your computer from many different kinds of threats, inlcuding viruses.

Step 4: Download antispyware software

After you’ve confirmed that you have antivirus software, you should confirm that you have antispyware software. To find out why you need both, see What’s the difference between spyware and a virus?

Microsoft offers Windows Defender to help protect against spyware and other unwanted software. If your computer is running Windows Vista, you already have Windows Defender. If your computer is running Windows XP, you can download Windows Defender for free.

Step 5: Record system information

It’s a good idea to record your computer’s system information in case a technician needs it later. To do so:

•	Click Start, then Run, and type “msinfo32″ in the text field. Click OK to open the System Information window.

•	In the window, on theFile menu, click Export.
•	Name the file and save it to an external storage device such as a blank CD or thumb drive, and store it in a safe place.Note: Windows Live OneCare also offers easy file backup and restore.You should also keep the Windows installation CDs and related product key handy.

The most important aspect of setting up a new computer is to ensure your system has the latest updates and security software installed.

Make sure these are downloaded and installed to help defend against viruses and other potential threats before you connect to the Internet.

Security and privacy

How do I protect myself against computer attacks/ Viruses

No one technique offers complete protection against computer viruses. You can, however, take several steps to protect yourself from viruses carried by e-mail:

• Know where your e-mail is coming from. Be especially careful of e-mail from unknown sources.
• Be careful of attachments to your e-mail. Be especially careful of executable attachments that end in .exe, .pif, or .vbs, among others, and never open attachments that you aren’t completely sure about.
• Make sure your e-mail software is NOT set up to automatically download or install e-mail attachments.
• E-mail addresses can be spoofed, which means they can appear to be sent from a different address than they really came from. Don’t automatically trust e-mail from any address you recognize.
• Install virus scanning software on your computer, and keep it updated.
• Make sure your computer’s operating system is up to date with the latest security upgrades.
• And in case the worst happens and your computer is infected, make sure you have backups of your data files.

Your domain name is being watched!

Hi everybody
I experienced something very disturbing while trying to register another domain name online as I use them for so many promotions. While I was checking the right domain names to use for my website, a special kind of software was tracking all the names I tried and dropped, I never knew until the next day when I was ready to register the name I wrote down on my list, I discovered it has been registered by someone else, the exact name, I was shocked!

I tracked the name back to the registrant and I found out that it was Go-daddy’s special tracking and registration software that did it, I was really mad and upset so please watch out, do not check the domain names if your are not yet ready to register them. This is a friendly word of advice.

The basics of online gold rush!

Do people still make money online?

I sat down in my living room one day and that was the question that came to my mind. The answer is YES, the internet gold rush is not over, in fact, it’s just starting! My only little concern is about the fraudsters who are taking the opportunity to lie and swindle innocent people.

The internet can be the best place for information, education and wealth multiplication and yet it can be the worst place to be. Let me say I am a living witness of the internet gold rush, I am not a good writer so please kindly bear with me.

My first advice to anybody out there who wants to be successful online is follow some basic rules which I have outline below; it will help you a lot. I was so curious in knowing what works from what does not work so I used my wordtracker shareware to investigate which one of the home based businesses are true but I was disappointed to see that most of them are liars, fake and again; opportunist! I. First you need to get yourself organized, make up a very good workspace either at your home or at your rented office; I suggest you should start from home to cut down on expenses.

To start an internet business, you need a very good name, so do your research and get a name that would serve as a keyword on its own and as your destination in life(what you wish to achieve), you could use the wordtracker software again to complete this task.

I am referring to wordtracker because this was the software that I used and it worked wonders for me.

Depending on what you finally made up your mind to do, either you wish to educate people online like myself or you simply want to get involved in the world of ecommerce, you still need a form of research tool and I recommend the electronic journal.

To find how deep your main keyword header can go, for those of you who are lawyers or legal advisers, I recommend you use research sites like Lexis/Nexis, play around with your imagination, ask yourself what you want if you were at the user end of the computer, ask your friends questions, ask your wife like I always do, ask your spouse, ask everybody close to you questions on what kind of things they would search for on the internet if they were browsing or you can make it easy on yourself and ask wordtracker again and let your imagination go wild. This wordtracker software was developed solely for making your lives easy and I say you should take advantage of that purpose.

II. PREPARE YOUR RECIPE
Secondly, like very well cooked and delicious food, you need the best recipe. In this case you need a very good web host to allow you upload files almost every time you make changes to your website. We are talking about a very good transfer volume in a month, trust me you don’t want to rob Peter to pay Paul. I recommend Host gator or 1and1.com, I have been using both of the companies for as long as four (IV) years. People have different web host out there but I know they are reliable, but again as any other business, they have their own ups and downs, so please use your judgment to make your decision, I am only recommending you based on my own personal experience. It took me time to discover them after I wasted so much money on other web host companies because I have so many websites, I use them as money machines, I’ll share that with you later in this chapter.

After deciding on your web host, the next step is to design your website. You have two choices, either designs your website yourself or contracts it to a professionals like ctwebdesigners.net for customized templates and customized solutions.

In the process of preparing your recipe, I would like you to meditate on what your main dreams are and what you intend to achieve within a short period or long period of time.
